Dr. Maria Montessori, MD was ahead of her
time when she became the first female doctor
in Italy in 1896. Dr. Montessori’s work became
centered on the study of children and how
they learn. During her many years of direct
observation of children she considered no
preconceived notion or theory about their
abilities and did not attempt to manipulate
their behavior with rewards or punishments.
She prepared the children’s environment every
day and observed the children. Over time she
developed materials that satisfied children’s
interest, needs and abilities. She discovered
that given the right environment and materials
children could far surpass an adult’s
expectations. Today her method of teaching
and materials are being used in Montessori
schools around the world.

“Suppose I said there was a planet without
schools or teachers, where study was
unknown, and yet the inhabitants-doing
nothing but living and walking about-came to
know all things, to carry in their minds the
whole of learning, would you not think I was
romancing? Well, just this, which seems so
fanciful as to be nothing but the invention of a
fertile imagination, is a reality. It is the child’s
way of learning. This is the path he follows. He
learns everything without knowing he is
learning it, and in doing so he passes little by
little from the unconscious to the conscious,
treading always in the path of joy and love.”

What is Montessori?

Our Montessori Environment

The Rims Montessori Academy for Children
specializes in the education of children ages
3-9. The small size of our campus allows
teachers and students to develop a special
rapport which is enriched over a three year
cycle. Learning takes place through the
senses. Students learn through the
manipulation of the hands-on materials
designed for their interests and needs.
The classroom atmosphere is nurturing,
inquiring and cooperative as students are
not confined to desks and are allowed to
interact with each other. Teachers support
the students socially, emotionally and
academically. Children exercise decision
making, time management, social
expression and self-discipline daily.
Subjects are integrated with each other
and all subject material is available at all
times. Students are given uninterrupted
time to work with core subject materials as
well as time to explore special interests.
